Did you know that…
This competition has a long and interesting history. It originated in the country where it still remains most popular — the United States. Nevertheless, nowadays, it is popularly held all over the world. In the USA, the national spelling bee usually takes place once a year in late May or early June, and you can watch it on TV.
Everyone knows what a spelling bee is, but not many people know what its name actually means.
Over the years, the word bee has not only been used to describe the insect but has had many other meanings. Some centuries ago, bee (bean or been) used to refer to a social gathering – a meeting of friends and neighbors where everyone participated in one joint activity, such as sewing, for example.
Usually, such “bee” activities were done with the aim of helping a friend or a family member.
Previous names for spelling bees have emphasized the competitive elements of the event. For example, people called it a “spelling match,” “spelling fight” and even “spelling combat” before settling on the more communal “spelling bee” which sounds much more like a celebration of spelling in the community.
